Marija: Baby Jesus spoke with authority

(Source: Medjugorje Today)

Hearing the Infant Jesus give Christmas message instead of Mary was a great surprise to visionary Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti. Afterwards she cried a lot, but also felt a great gratitude. “He spoke with great authority” and “I am trying to understand what I saw” Marija tells in radio interview.

“Jesus addressed me as the King of Peace. It was a child but these words were spoken with authority. With a voice that remained strong within me” Medjugorje visionary Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti tells of her surprising Christmas Day encounter with the Infant Jesus

“Jesus addressed me as the King of Peace. It was a child but these words were spoken with authority. With a voice that remained strong within me” Medjugorje visionary Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti tells of her surprising Christmas Day encounter with the Infant Jesus

Authority exuded from the Child Jesus when Medjugorje visionary Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti heard the Child give her a message on December 25, instead of His Mother. His voice remained strong within Marija when she composed herself in tears after the apparition was over.

The experience was completely unexpected for Marija who says she has seen the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms every Christmas Day for 31 years, but never heard Jesus speak before. When she talked to Radio Maria soon after the apparition, she still struggled to understand what she had seen.

“Today is really a special day because Our Lady gave no message. I describe it like this” Marija opened the radio interview.

“The Madonna came with the Child Jesus in her arms. She gave no message. But the Child Jesus began to speak and said, “I am your peace, live My Commandments.” The Madonna and Baby Jesus blessed us together with the Sign of the Cross.”

“Jesus addressed me as the King of Peace. He was a child but these words were spoken with authority. With a voice that remained strong within me. I heard the voice of Jesus as a child. It was not the voice of a child of a few hours. I do not know how to say this. A Jesus who is small, newborn, who addresses us” Marija said.

“I was very strongly affected, Father Livio. I cried a lot. I did so another two or three times before, but this time greatly moved me. I am trying to understand what I saw.”

“We were all surprised. He caused a strong emotion. After the apparition I started to cry, I am usually happy. Also this time I am still happier. It is an extraordinary thing. It moves me that Jesus has blessed us and spoken words for the first time. Because it is the first time Jesus spoke to me” Marija told Radio Maria.

maria2-“I would not expect anything like this. I could expect Our Lady would tell me she would not appear to me anymore or something else, I do not know. For 31 years Our Lady has appeared every year on Christmas Day with Jesus in her arms. But this was the first time Jesus spoke.”

“By the time it seemed to me that the apparition was something usual, ordinary, but something extraordinary also happened today. In my heart I feel a great gratitude” the visionary said.

The experience had Marija recount the first Christmas when she was having apparitions. In 1981, the Infant Jesus made a gesture, but spoke no words to the seers:

“The only other time that something extraordinary happened (like this) was when the Child Jesus blinked. And now the second time when He spoke” Marija said.

Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn speaks before Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in St. Stephens Cathedral, Vienna, September 23, 2010

Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn

Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn

Praised Be Jesus and Mary!
Praised be Jesus Christ!

Dear Marija, dear Ivan, thank you first of all that you came. Thank you that you came again! [applause] Thank you for your service across so many years. For your work, for your service of being messengers of the Gospa [Our Lady]. You bring us children of this world, children of humanity, her love and her presence, and may God pay you back a hundred-fold for what you’re doing tirelessly.

Before we go into Adoration, I wish to tell you three things that are very deep in my heart. [I’ll speak] very shortly.

First, if I think back to the beginning of the prayer community here in Vienna, the beginning of the 80’s, in the very beginning at the Dominican Church, (I am Dominican), I remember how we were surprised that every Thursday the church was full. We were not used to that. And that people were praying for hours. There was Confession, there was Rosary. But you see, this is nearly 30 years ago, and the astonishing thing is, I can see tonight, you have never stopped praying! That is not usual. And that shows what Our Lady always says at the end of her messages, “Thank you for having responded to my call.” I can only repeat, thank you for having heard her until today, and thank you for continuing to listen to her.

The second is of our beloved icon Maria of Posch. Maria Posch is in eastern Hungary, and I was there for the Jubilee of that pilgrimage place. The original is here, the copy in Maria Posch. It’s an icon through which the Mother of God has shown her closeness through the miracle of tears. In 1697 there was the big miracle of tears because the icon cried for many days. Why did she cry? She cried about the suffering of the people. But I believe mainly because she suffers with us, she is compassionate, because she is really the mother of all of us her tears have guided many, many people back to faith, deeper into faith; and if you look everyday there are thousands of candles burning in front of her picture here in the Dom, St. Stephen’s [Cathedral]. I want to indicate something to you which is a speciality of this icon, because this icon is the indicator of the path. It is Mary indicating Jesus with her hand. She shows us the way. She shows us Jesus who said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” She shows us Jesus. “Do what he tells you to do!” That’s what she tells at Cana, “Do what he tells you to do.”

But this icon has something very special. Normally in the icons of the Church of the East, the baby, the child Jesus, blesses with both his hands. And Mary indicates Jesus and Jesus blesses. Here, and this is very rare, here there is something else. He indicates his mother as she indicates him. He indicates her and on this icon Jesus does what he does later on the cross. He says, “Behold your mother!” Here is your mother. See your mother. I believe that this is something very special that we rarely see on icons: the love of Jesus for his mother, he shows her to us.

And the third is something funny, something amusing. I have heard so many witnesses about Medjugorje in these nearly 30 years. One thing I have to tell you because it’s kind of funny and I believe that I’m allowed to do that.

I took a train after my visit to Medjugorje. And I felt that this was a little wink from Our Lady. I sat on the train and wanted to be pious and pray the breviary. A very voluminous lady sat down next to me. She was really, really fat. And I had to really push myself to the side because she left very little space. And I was slightly annoyed, I must admit. I was not virtuous. And then she began to talk to me. I didn’t like it at all. She asked me, “Father, where are you a parish priest?” I sort of reacted in an annoyed way. She was a Roma lady from Burgland and I acted a bit annoyed, and I said, “I want to read.” And she asked again, “Hey, Father, where are you a parish priest?” And again annoyed I answered, “I am the bishop of Vienna.” And she answered, “Oh, yes, I¹m sorry. I didn’t want to disturb you.” And that made me become a bit more friendly. And then out of the sky she began to say,  “My husband was in Medjugorje.” I didn’t say anything about Medjugorje, she said it. “My husband was in Medjugorje. And he climbed up a hill where there is a big cross at the top. And he climbed back down. And since he came back he is so kind and friendly like he was never before in his life with me!” [applause]

And she said she wants to go to Medjugorje also now. Perhaps she will also be so friendly.

The Lord is in our midst truly! Truly, truly like in the times in Galilee, in Jerusalem, so real, the Risen Lord!
We want to greet him now. And in great gratitude, in great trust, we want to adore him.

[His Eminence then presided, leading the congregation in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.]

This is a transcript of Cardinal Schönborn’s homily given during the Vigil Mass at Medjugorje celebrating the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

Cardinal Schönborn

Praised be Jesus Christ!

Dear brothers and sisters here in the church and on the squares in front of the church, and in the yellow hall… We are all conscious of the fact that it is a big privilege to not have to celebrate the New Year with champagne. (laughter) Maybe later. (laughter and applause)

But now we are allowed to celebrate the beginning of the New Year with Mary and Joseph and with the child that is lying in the manger and with the shepherds.

These days, we have all come to Medjugorje to be especially close to the Mother of the Lord. To be more exact, we have to say that we have come here because we know that the Mother of the Lord wants to be close to us.

With her, we want to begin the New Year. And the first thing that moves me when I think about the manger and the shepherds is that there were no angels present. Here there is an angel at the nativity set (points), but in the gospel there are no angels there. They were on the hills with the shepherds. An entire host of angels. But Mary and Joseph only heard about it. The shepherds told them. They also didn’t see the Gospa. But there are people here who told about it. And we trust that the Mother of God really is close to us.

Belief comes from hearing. And it impresses me that first, in the gospel of today, there is talk about hearing. We have to listen to the good news first. We have two ears, two eyes, and only one mouth. That means we have to listen much, watch much, and then talk also. And what are we supposed to say? We are supposed to report what we have seen and heard. The world needs a new evangelization and that is only possible through people for whom it is impossible to keep silent about what they have seen and heard.

We all have received the faith. And through baptism we all have received the task to pass on the faith. The shepherds related what they were told. And from there it went on. The gospel, the good news was told and those who told it were believable. Those who heard also saw that the word and life harmonise; that what the witnesses saw is also true in their life.

How can we be witnesses of the good news? First, by looking to Mary. Mary kept all that happened in her heart and pondered it.

Brothers and sisters, what we need most in this time is prayer. I’m saying this with a sadness of some sorts. I know that I’m not praying enough. I know that prayer is life. Without the living relationship with God our life becomes dry end empty.

What does the Mother of God tell us all the time? Pray. Make yourself time for prayer. Is that a good resolution for the New Year? For us priests and deacons? For us all? Time for prayer – it gives so much strength and so much joy; so much clarity. Let us ask Mary, that she helps us to pray more. When we pray our word is also filled with life. And then our testimony is credible.

I want to tell you something about what the apostle Paul told us. The Year of Paul is already over, we are now in the Year of Priests. But the word of the apostle Paul was so strong because it was filled with life. In the reading of today he talks about God sending his Son so that we can become sons. The daughters are not excluded here. Daughters and sons are meant together. But Paul says we are called to become sons – not slaves. Like Jesus is Son of God we are supposed to be allowed to call God, Father. In the beginning of this year the apostle Paul tells us: You are sons and not slaves.

I believe Medjugorje is a place where a lot of people confess. Confession is deliverance from the slavery of sin. Nothing makes us less free than sin. God wants us as sons: Freedom of the children of God. And for that he gifted us with the sacrament of reconciliation. We are to have a new relationship with God, to be allowed to call him Abba. Jesus invited us to that in a way that we trust him, that we trust God. There is so much fear of God in us .

“Jesus, I trust in you.” (in Croatian) I can also speak Polish (laughter). Jesu Ufam Tobie. Jesus, I trust in you. Pope John Paul II left us this message: Trust in the mercy of God. Trust in the mercy of Jesus.

Trust can be heroic sometimes, if life becomes difficult. If a marriage becomes a burden, if an illness oppresses us, if we don’t know what becomes of our work – then to say Jesu Ufam Tobie – that can be heroic. Trust – that really is an act of faith. And again we look to Mary. Who has made and gave this act of trust, of faith, more than Mary? Jesu Ufam Tobie. That is to be our programme in the coming year.

It is almost midnight and the fireworks are cracking outside. But we are not cracking, we are praying. We are not cracking, but we are singing!

And a last word: The shepherds returned and praised God, praised him for what they heard and seen. We, too, will return home. In order that we can become witnesses of the gospel, we have to praise God first. The shepherds praised God for what they have seen and heard. I hope that we can all drive home, travel home after these days here, and praise God for what we have seen and heard. Then people will also believe us when we tell. Then our word will be credible.

Now it is almost midnight. It is exactly the right moment to profess our faith. With this faith we are going into the New Year. God bless this year.

Dio ci vuole avere come figli.

Was sagt uns die Muttergottes ständig betet?

Christoph Schönborn, u suslavlju dr. fra Ivana Sesara, provincijala Hercegovačke franjevačke provincije i drugih 120 svećenika.
